Monchique and storks go hand in hand from my point of view. As we drove into the historic town, the hills were lined with stork nests on top of electrical poles, and posts of all kinds. It was a road trip for Randy, Marc and myself. Jackson had a rest at home that day as it didn’t seem to be a dog appropriate trip. Marc was scheduled to meet an artist friend who was holding a vernissage in the centre of the city.

Marc and Liz had time to chat while Randy and me perused the paintings. Then we were off to do a bit of exploring in Monchique.

We decided to head up the mountain in the car and find a place for lunch. Not a problem. It was a lovely restaurant clinging to the side of the road with a gorgeous view of the valley below. The food was delicious although pricier than what we were used to.

Our journey continued uphill toward the peak of Fóia, the highest point in the Algarve at 902m (2,959ft). It is part of the range of mountains that divide the Algarve from the Alentejo region.

For me, the trip up and down was fuelled by high adrenaline: I have a fear of heights so I was screaming loudly inside. It’s something about those sheer drops and sudden curves coupled with narrow roads that makes my palms sweat! It all ended well.
