The clouds break

Thursday January 23 2025

There was a break in the cloud cover on Thursday morning and the rain stopped…temporarily. So, i took a quick stroll around town and visited some favourite spots. The most important was O Victor, a local lunchtime restaurant highly popular with local folks. The food is simply presented, plentiful portions and delicious. I missed the daily special so I had Dourada or Gilt Head Sea Bream. Delicious!

The prominent colour of the day was yellow contrasted with blue. The bees were proverbially busy, taking advantage of the sunlight. The spread of yellow flowers in a field is the Bermuda buttercup, Oxalis pes-caprae. It’s an invasive plant neither from Bermuda nor a buttercup. It’s also known as African wood-sorrel and hails from South Africa. It can be toxic when eaten in large quantities particularly by sheep. The blue flower is Common borage, Borago officinalis. It is native to this part of Europe, its edible leaves are used in salads, soups and sauces. The lovely flower as a drink garnish and as an ingredient in some gin.

And that was Thursday while the sun was out. Enjoyed every second of it while it lasted.
