Passion flower for Passion Sunday

My time in the Algarve is rapidly drawing to close. On Tuesday April 5 I will be on the train to Lisbon. Sunday April 3 was a beautiful day with some interesting surprises at the end. We decided to have lunch in the square in Moncarapacho before heading off to Fuseta for a shoreline hike to Pinheiro.

The chapel at the end of the square was open, so I took some photos, of course. I was curious about why the litters with the costumed images were there. More about that later.

And then it was time to hike. The weather was sunny and warm. Luckily, there was a fairly stiff breeze. The tide was coming in while we were walking the shoreline.

The flamingos are unusually pink this year and are a magnificent sight as they take flight.

Back in Estoi, I was surprised to find a religious procession literally happening on my doorstep. The local Roman Catholic parish was marking Passion Sunday with an outdoor Stations of the Cross procession. Here are a few images.

The crowds eventually dispersed and the village returned to its usual Sunday evening calm. The swallows were busy feeding their young and tending their nests.
