The Fuseta Salt Flats & Beach

Invitations to hike are always appreciated and when Randy suggested a walk through the Fuseta salt flats east of that town and out to the beach on Wednesday Jan 31, there was no hesitation on my part. It’s one of the few places in the Algarve where the surface is flat, at sea level, with no sudden ascents or descents. It was a bright sunny day and luckily there was a cool breeze.

It must have been low tide because there were sand bars everywhere.

Sea salt production and fishing are two important local industries. Various forms of local salt as well as a variety of locally caught fish are available in various markets of the region. It’s been this way for centuries and it’s an education to see these industries in action today.

The flamingos took note of our presence but decided not to fly off.

I love watching the ducks fishing, diving in head first leaving their bottoms sticking straight up!

Bottoms up, darlings!

Our walk was punctuated by a leisurely lunch on a terrace next to the sea where Jackson was treated like a proper guest! It was a fabulous day and here are some final images for the day:
