Kilkenny: a city of Irish charm

Friday July 26, 2024

Jet lag was definitely affecting me on Friday. I was awake before the birds but managed to hang out at the hotel until the sky brightened. I had noticed the evening before something on a map entitled The Canal Walk. It appeared to be an urban walk that encircled the castle grounds parallel to a canal that was initiated during the Victorian period but never completed. Everything was closed, there was very little traffic and the birds were singing lustily. A truly beautiful morning for a walk. So, off I went in search of The Canal Walk.

It took about an hour to make the circuit because of meeting all the dogs taking their humans for a walk, the various flora and fauna along the way and simply taking time to breathe it all in. I was back at the hotel with plenty of time for breakfast before setting out on another jaunt. There are plenty of side alleys and roundabout ways of getting from one point to another. Lots of fun to explore but it is possible to completely lose your bearings and find yourself right back where you started from. I know from experience!

The next stop was the former St Mary’s Church, now the Kilkenny Archaeology Museum. It gives an in-depth view of Kilkenny prerecorded history and through the ages with a particular emphasis on the Middle Ages and the following centuries.

And then it was time go and register for the Harp Festival and meet everyone. There were several harp playing introductory hands on sessions followed by a free tea-time concert. The building where the event was held is an actual school. In front of the building there are rose bushes and of course, the inevitable happened! The scent from the roses was intoxicating.

Let the music begin!
