Kalkan Road Trip

Saturday January 31, 2026

We left Kuşadasi in a downpour of rain on Saturday morning heading south to another coastal town, Kalkan. It is an old fishing town not far from Kaş and the only safe port between Fethiye and Kaş. It was a five hour trip and luckily the heavens closed their doors and the rain began to ease off as the tarmac passed beneath our wheels. It was also the Muslim Holy Day so most places were closed although some of the gas stations with snack bars were open. There was coffee!

Our destination was Villa Maya advertised as being in Kaş but it’s closer to Kalkan. It’s perched three quarters of the way up a mountain accessed by a narrow two lane road and an even tinier driveway. The view from the patio is breathtaking – literally, for me, the first time I saw it. If I had known about the location when I booked it, I might have chosen something else. Now, several days later I’m happy with the location.

The clouds closed in during the evening and the rain poured down and the wind blew. There was no snow or ice and the electricity stayed on! We had to go out for supplies and thankfully a local grocery store was open and then we settled in for the night! Tomorrow will bring more adventure! Until then.

  1. You’re certainly seeing a lot, that’s wonderful. I’ll look forward to a few more stories once you are back here in Portugal.
