Five Feet, Nine Inches Above Ground

Kaş is a seaside town on the Mediterranean coast in south western Türkiye. We are staying about 40 minutes north of the town and only need to take a right hand turn at the end of the driveway and follow a circuitous paved road down the mountain…lots of fun first thing in the morning! The modern town is built on top of the ancient Lycean city of Antiphollos.

It was once a fishing village but that occupation has disappeared. In fact, much of the coastal area is now devoted to greenhouse agriculture. That and tourism seem to be the base of the local economy. During the “high” season, the streets are packed with people and there is virtually nowhere to park a vehicle. At this time of year it is quite the opposite which is fine with me!

From Kaş, we drove through a mountain lined valley to the village of Kekova which is a village devoted to boat tours of the of the sunken ruins of towns around the islands facing its shores. Being off-season and late in the day, the only boat tour on offer was for a highly inflated price. We elected to stay in the harbour where the weather was warm and sunny. Here are some shots of that road trip.

The return drive to home base was a little less dramatic than the morning venture downhill. Instead, we followed the coastal highway which is carved into the walls of the cliffs overhanging the ocean. People died building that highway.

“Home” in time for the sunset and then dinner – what a perfect way to end a beautiful day. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Until next time!
